The Buzz

Petaluma cares: In an e-nouncement to Cinnabar Theater subscribers and supporters, artistic and executive director Elly Lichenstein, said, “If you have read the articles in the Argus-Courier or the Bohemian, you already know that we face a cash-flow crisis. Those of you who responded to the articles have contributed $37,000 thus far toward our goal. The Northern California Grantmakers just issued us a check for $30,000, to be paid back by the end of June. They believe in our theater. Still, we need to raise another $25,000 by the end of January.”

The 50 Biggest Movies Of 2011

Submitted by Bleeding Cool Staff Writer on December 30, 2010 – 8:39 am (14) comments

Having covered 2010 and 2009 quite nicely in the past, Michael Moran now looks forward to 2011′s roster of blockbusters for Bleeding Cool:

Predicting the biggest films of any year is a foolhardy venture. The fortunes of a movie as it develops can turn on studio whim, the news agenda on release day, or even the weather. Throw in the unpredictable effects of the biggest economic crisis in living memory and you have a virtually unforeseeable box office landscape.

Undernews for December 28

We have almost made it through a truly dismal year. The three main Democratic voices - Obama, Reid and Pelosi - are their party's least competent leaders in modern memory. The Republican leaders are not only incompetent but aggressively stupid - and surrounded by a chorus of spoiled brat sound bite junkies who make Lindsay Lohan appear a raving intellectual. By today's GOP rules, Robert Taft, Margaret Chase Smith, or Dwight Eisenhower wouldn't even be allowed to run for county commissioner.

11 for '11: Things to Watch in the New Year - MOVIES

Comics are king in the world of movies these days. From feature films based on comic books to films that look, feel and sound like they should have been a comic book, Hollywood is in love with genre-based work as seen in comic books and graphic novels. And 2011 is shaping up to be one of the biggest years in recent memory, with an unprecedented number of high-concept high-action movies coming down the pipe and filling up your local multiplex.

“The Green Hornet”

You know The Green Hornet from comics I bet (or the television series) but did you know it actually began as a radio series in the 1930′s? It’s true! I’ve always been fascinated with things that began as radio programs or comic books (admittedly I’m a comic nerd from waaaay back) and I’m also a lover, er, fan of Seth Rogen ! So, when I found out he was going to play Britt Reid AKA The Green Hornet, I was even more impressed with him. The trailers look incredible, and to add even more fuel to my fire? I just now found out that Edward Furlong will also be in the movie. Two hotties that I’ve liked for a little longer than a minute, in the same film – I’m willing to bet the people in the theater will be damn tired of seeing me. Come on January 14th, 2011! The suspense and anticipation is killing me! You too? Here allow me to try and tide you over

2011 film preview: 25 films Mike Leigh didn't direct (plus one that he did)

So, it's time for Another Year , meaning not just 2011 but also the latest film from Happy-Go-Lucky director Mike Leigh, a traipse through four seasons in the lives of ordinary people, exploring their small joys and tragedies. Kind of like Blue Valentine , but with no oral sex.

That pretty much sums up the next few months on the big screen: life as we know it, with the occasional foray into the supernatural, the horrific, the fantastic, and the absurd — films like The Green Hornet 3D , The Rite , The Adjustment Bureau , and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, which these days are also a lot like life as we know it.

2010 Women in Movies: Good News, Bad News

I’ve always loved going to the movies, and since I own my own business, I’ll sneak out midday sometimes. In between meetings, with a large popcorn in lieu of lunch (“one scant pump of the buttery topping, please”), alone in the second row, transported to another person’s story in some other place or time. It’s the most satisfying workday break I can imagine.

Still, if all those CG elements attract little special notice from audiences, the Luma team will be pleased. It will be a sign that they have done their job.

The (Dis)comfort of 3D… Should We Get Used To It?

Will there come a day when 2D films are virtually non existent?

More and more frequently, the content of a film, the director or the cast is becoming less of a priority. Instead, the phrase "In mind-blowing 3D" has become the tagline norm just as much as the wit on display when marketing execs decide "Slow justice is no justice" is fitting for the 2D fare. I, as should all of us, blame James Cameron.

The Green Hornet

Less than a week after Columbia Pictures unleashed a ton of new promotional materials for director Michel Gondry 's upcoming The Green Hornet adaptation, two new preview clips from the movie have been released online and three new TV spots have hit the airwaves.

Based on the classic masked crimefighter created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker that first appeared in a radio serial in the 1930s, The Green Hornet stars Seth Rogen as Britt Reid, a lackadaisical party boy who inherits his father's ( Tom Wilkinson ) publishing empire and decides to use his fortune to fight crime. With the help of skilled martial artist and weapons expert Kato ( Jay Chou ) and his resourceful assistant, Lenore ( Cameron Diaz ), the Green Hornet sets his sights on the city's top crime figure, Benjamin Chudnofsky (Academy Award-winner Christoph Waltz ), who aims to unite the city's criminal element into a supermafia.

Witness the Birth of Black Beauty In A New Clip From ‘The Green Hornet’

While most people protest that the main character is the most important part to any incarnation of The Green Hornet , there is a huge argument to be made that the true heroes are Kato and Black Beauty, the tricked out car of The Green Hornet. That’s certainly what they’re going for in Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry’s upcoming film, as Rogen even toured around the country with Black Beauty last summer pimping the film.

Teaser Trailer For Kevin Smith’s Red State

Submitted by Brendon Connelly on December 23, 2010 – 1:11 pm (6) comments

Kevin Smith has promised that his next picture, Red State , will horrify us. On first impressions, this trailer seems to suggest he might well deliver on that promise.

Now, a lot of those images are of the kind we’ve seen in so-called torture porn pictures, and I was expecting something a touch more understated. That’s no criticism, mind. As a passionate fan of Hostel and Hostel 2 , and a believer in their angry, impassioned political messages, I can see exactly what cards Smith is playing here, and understand why this might be.

Super! movie roundup

.

Every year movies come out more and more, and while some people grumble under their breath and curse the fact that they pay so much money to sit in cheaply made seats from some South Eastern Asian country, eating cardboard with butter on it, and burning their retinas into little jelly nubs. Not me, I enjoy paying out the Wazoo my hard-earned dollars on the chance to see a good movie. So what are we going to expect for this next year?

2010; The highs and lows

There was much to grumble about this year, but amid all the doom and gloom and the 3D movies, our critics found some wonderful shows, books, bands and songs to lift their spirits

I revelled in the continuing ability of Alva Noto, master of austere German electronica, to create tours de force from bleeps, hums and warbles. For 2, a tribute to his heroes, and Mimikry, a jarring collaboration with Blixa Bargeld, were the two great unheard albums of this year.

The year’s worst movie month?

Uptown’s January movie preview assures the dead of winter 2011 won’t leave Winnipeg audiences cold — cinematically speaking, that is

Highlights for January include Barney's Version (starring Paul Giamatti and Dustin Hoffman).

Unless you’re talking about curling up under a quilt to watch some gem on DVD, January and the movies seemingly weren’t made for each other.

The award-winning film-maker Jafar Panahi was jailed for six years after the Iranian authorities found him guilty of "propaganda against the system". A vocal supporter of the green uprising that followed Iran's disputed 2009 election, Panahi has also been banned from directing or producing films for 20-years. Writing on the film blog, Peter Bradshaw paid tribute to Panahi's life and work and called for "a protest retrospective" at the BFI Southbank. Elsehwere cinema organisations posted an online petition, protesting the film-maker's innocence and calling for his immediate release. The likes of Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Juliette Binoche and Francis Ford Coppola have already spoken out in Panahi's defence.

‘Captain America’ tops list of geek movies to watch in 2011

The golden age of geek-friendly films will continue next year, with more flicks about superheroes, aliens and technology-gone-crazy set to hit the big screen -- and technophiles everywhere are offering their predictions for the best geek movies to watch in 2011.

According to a ridiculously unscientific poll of IT geeks and comic book lovers, the film debut of Marvel Comics fan favorite Captain America tops the list of next year’s most anticipated geek movies; followed closely by The Green Lantern; Thor; The Green Hornet; and the movie that already deserves an Oscar for most interesting juxtaposition in a film title, Cowboys and Aliens.

Go Behind The Scenes On ‘The Green Hornet’

It’s funny how the general perspective on Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry’s upcoming Green Hornet for Sony has changed over the past year. The film was destined to fail several times after playing musical chairs with the director, pushing the date back more that 6 months, and converting the film to 3D after it was in the can. However, now that the film has been released to critics, word is coming out that the movie may be worth something after all.

True Grit, Carlos, The King's Speech Open

★★★★ Joel and Ethan Coen — always unfairly accused of favoring craftsmanship over emotion — might have crafted their most deeply felt movie yet. Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), the 14-year-old daughter of a murdered Arkansas farmer, hires infamous U.S. Marshal “Rooster” Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) to track and bring to justice the man responsible. Even the least-loved Coen films have offered superficial pleasures, and this one has plenty: punchy dialogue; shimmering cinematography; Matt Damon’s nimble performance as a puffed-up Texas Ranger. The soul of the story, however, is the relationship between Rooster and Hattie, both brilliantly performed; what develops between Mattie and Cogburn is pure respect for someone with a toughness each had thought only existed in themselves. Mattie might be the perfect Coen heroine, with a controlled exterior that makes it seem as though there’s nothing more emotional going on beneath the surface. Her final act in the film shows that perception to be a miscalculation — and maybe folks have been making the same miscalculation about the Coens all these years. Since “Iron Man,” Comic Con has been a rite of passage for studio pictures hoping to tap into fanboy fever and turn it into box office gold.

With “TRON: Legacy” not delivering and, “Watchmen” under-performing and  “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” falling way short of expectations, will Hollywood re-think its Comic Con as America’s Cannes approach to pre-selling big ticket movies?

Let's All Go To the Movies... In 2011

Nicolas D'Agosto and Jacqueline MacIness Wood learn you just can't cheat death in Final Destination 5 .

The Avengers , Terence Malick, and... um, Spy Kids 4 .

Now that we’ve gotten the best movie/album/TV series of 2010 out of the way ( The Social Network /Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy / The Walking Dead seem to more or less be the consensus picks, and in a pinch I’ll go along with those choices), let’s take a look at what’s coming down the pop culture pike for 2011. This is by no means intended to be a comprehensive list; instead, it’s one individual’s view on what might (or might not) be what we’ll all be talking about besides the 2012 presidential race.
