“, these awards are voted on by the loyal readers of the Bayern Offside. Each day this week, you’ll have a new award to vote on. Since your nominating committee (me) is constantly thinking up new categories, you might have multiple opportunities to vote in one day.
There is one important thing to keep in mind: All voting will end at 12:00 a.m. US Eastern time on January 1 . This will be especially important for whatever award goes up on the 31st. Then we’ll have the big winner’s announcement post to kick off the new year.
Let’s move on to our first award, Funniest Moment of the Year . Now surely, many of you out there will have a humorous memory that didn’t make it into the final list. For instance, I probably could have populated a long list of moments just from the celebration days at the Marienplatz. But, I’m sure you’ll find one choice from the list below that generated a wheeze or a snort. Look for the box at the end of the post to cast your vote! So without any further ado, the nominees are:
As Bayern did the media rounds during their training camp in Dubai, coach Louis van Gaal and a number of players sat down for an interview program with local TV..well perhaps tried to sit down is a better phrase to describe Bastian Schweinsteiger’s entry to the makeshift studio.
FC Bayern has mastered the art of the entertaining corporate promotion for its premium partners. When Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger allegedly took the new Audi A1 for a test drive, it was a bit of a tease for “car people” and a genuinely amusing personal moment with two star players. But it took on a whole other dimension of hilarity when Bastian and Philipp’s commentary on the drive was dubbed over in English in a tone and style reminiscent of Godzilla vs. Megalon..
Perhaps Louis van Gaal didn’t want to be seen as getting too close to his players after Franck Ribery’s leaping hug the previous fall in Dortmund. But whatever the reason, Van Gaal was determined not to allow Arjen Robben the same opportunity for a leaping hug after striking the match-winning goal in Bremen. He got the hug anyway; just not in the position he expected.
Is it excessively juvenile to make fun of someone for having had their face destroyed by Michael Ballack? Probably. But Martin Demichelis wore the protective mask like no other before or since. Alternately conjuring up images of Batman, Green Hornet sidekick Kato, and the alter-ego of Don Diego de la Vega, the latter was finally settled upon as the new identity of the Bayern defender, given his national origin, or perhaps his penchant from aimlessly zig-zagging.
Louis van Gaal knew a Paulaner bath was coming in the victory celebration in Berlin following the final Bundesliga match of the 09-10 season. He wisely changed into sweat clothes during halftime, which delayed his return to the bench until after the 2nd half had started. But, the new duds didn’t make him any quicker when it came time to take evasive action. (Yes, I know I could post better quality video of this-I happen to like the Benny Hill music).
Attack of the Mask, part II? No one can really say whether Ivica Olic just has impaired vision, whether both he and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk are color blind, or if they played a few too many training matches opposite each other. But, whatever the cause, the result was a unique Bayern vs Bayern moment in the heat of a closely contested Pokal match..
