Oscar Nominated 'Black Swan' is No. 1 Overseas for Third Straight Week With $17 Mil

Teen sci-fi thriller "I Am Number Four" comes in second as Oscar nominees "True Grit" and "The King's Speech" take the third and fourth spots, respectively.

With its five nominations -- including best actress and best director bids for Natalie Portman and Darren Aronofsky , respectively -- Swan has collected a total of $122.6 million in overseas box office since making its offshore debut on Dec. 9. It opened No. 1 in Hong Kong and Spain, No. 2 in South Korea and claimed France as its biggest weekend market (No. 3 with $2.59 million in its third round at 363 locations for a market cume of $13.4 million).

Hornets collapse in 91-89 loss to Rockets

Remember the date--February 27, 2011. Remember the game.

The New Orleans Hornets blew a 15-point halftime lead at home and lost a key division game to the Houston Rockets 91-89 before a lively, Mardi Gras spirit-filled but disappointed crowd of 17,466 fans at New Orleans Arena, the eighth sellout of the season for the Hornets.

Bee-Voltron | Hornets247.com

Throughout the season, we have seen our team mixed and matched more times than Mark Cuban’s stock portfolio. We made several significant trades, changing our lineup, rotations, and roles on the team. Each one of our guys has individual skills, and it has been Monty’s job to evaluate each individual talent and utilize them to transform the Hornets into Bee-Voltron, a force so powerful that it makes Charles Oakley look like a girl scout. Individually, we all have powerful…… but combined, we can make some serious noise in the Playoffs. And Awaaaaay we go!

TCAT: 3-D needs standards

27 February 2011 By Rick Stanford, Columnist No Comments

3-D could very well be a new way to experience entertainment, but only if it’s done right. James Cameron succeeded by basing his entire movie off of the idea that it should be done in 3-D. Nintendo has the chance to do it right with the 3DS at the end of March.

Weekend Report: O 'Gnomeo,' Thou Art No. 1

Gnomeo and Juliet is proving to be more than just a winter fling, climbing to the top spot in its third weekend. The two new nationwide releases, though, sparked little interest, but Hall Pass was more respectable than the ditched Drive Angry . Overall business was down seven percent from the comparable weekend last year, when Shutter Island led, and estimates pegged the timeframe as the least-attended late February weekend in 16 years.

Green Hornet: Dynamic duo

The Green Hornet is not a known superhero, at least in this part of the world. So, when you watch a movie about a masked vigilante who is very rich, can boast of numerous technologically advanced gadgets and a sidekick to boot, and makes people think he is the bad guy, it doesn’t take long for you to go “Batman?”

Which James Franco will show up at the Oscars?

Hosting the Oscars is the logical next step in the career of James Franco, in that it's another predictably unpredictable move for a man striving to simultaneously be Hollywood's hardest-working -- and oddest -- actor.

On Sunday, Franco will co-host the 83rd Academy Awards with Anne Hathaway, and is also up for Best Actor for a gritty tour de force performance in "127 Hours."

Film Clips: See The Housemaid Drive Angry with her Hall Pass

(R) Straight out of hell and raging with fury, a father chases after the men who killed his daughter and kidnapped his daughter. Vengeance is his.

HALL PASS 2 stars (R) Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis play suburban dads granted a week of no-strings-attached freedom from their wives (Jenna Fischer and Christina Applegate). Writer/directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly get a few big laughs with gross-out slapstick, but mostly waste an intriguing polyamorous premise, while the lighting and make-up put the cast’s worst faces forward. Filmed in Atlanta, but set in Providence and Cape Cod.

Bibby, Evans and Crawford expected to debut tonight

The newest Wizards -- Mike Bibby, Maurice Evans and Jordan Crawford -- are expected to debut against the Miami Heat on Friday night at American Airlines Arena. They left Phoenix and joined the Wizards in Miami on Thursday and will be asked to help a team that has lost three in a row and 12 of its past 14 games.

Back stage

The Green Hornet (2011) is now showing at the New Capitol Cinemas.  It is a blackmobile that sputters and collapses, a real dud.

It is the antithesis of all the superhero movies you have ever seen, from Batman and Robin, through to Superman and Spiderman. These comic-book heroes and their clones like Bionic Woman, Supergirl and Wonderwoman, all fought crime and after many vicissitudes always came out on top.  Now in the age of 3-D and smelly films we have the generation of dirty socks super failures in the form of parodies.  Unfortunately this 21st Century version of The Green Hornet will not be the last - though it probably should be as a pseudo comedy.

Divas Wanted: Warner Brothers Remaking ‘The Bodyguard’

Warner Brothers announced their plans to remake the 1992 Kevin Costner/Whitney Houston film “ The Bodyguard ” and are reteaming with the writers of the Black List approved script, “ Family Getaway ,” which they bought last fall. Deadline broke the news that writers Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer have been tapped to reboot the love story of the bodyguard and the diva, this time updating the material to reflect the distinctly 2000s brand of celebrity fandom and technology (TMZ, Twitter), and including Iraq combat experience for the bodyguard. Lawrence Kasdan , who wrote a number of ‘80s classics (” The Empire Strikes Back ,” “ Raiders of the Lost Ark ,” “ The Big Chill ”) wrote the original ‘Bodyguard’ (actually his first screenplay) as a vehicle for Steve McQueen and Diana Ross in the ‘70s.

comic hitting the shelves!

That's something you may have heard around the comic shop any given month in the last year and a half or so, and the folks at Dynamite know it. So their decision to launch a new series, Green Hornet: Aftermath by Jai Nitz and Nigel Raynor, was not made lightly. Reteaming the creators of Parallel Lives , the prequel to the film, for the official sequel comic made too much sense, though. Exploring the still-starting-out careers of Green Hornet and Kato, Nitz gave us some hints of what's to come and why this comic should be on the shelves, and your pull list.

Inside Pulse Box Office Report: Liam Neeson No Longer

by Travis Leamons - February 20, 2011 | Email the author

Call it the Clint Eastwood Effect. Liam Neeson has been a consummate actor for years. Beginning in the ’80s in productions like Excalibur and Krull , Neeson would get some tutorials on what it took to be a bad-ass with bit roles in The Delta Force (where he would learn from Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin) and The Dead Pool (Clint Eastwood’s last go-around as “Dirty” Harry Callahan). The lessons learned would pay off for the Oscar nominee when he headlined Sam Raimi’s Darkman and Rob Roy . Years later he would mentor a young Obi-Wan Kenobi and Bruce Wayne.

With 5 days left until the NBA Trade Deadline, the Liberty Ballers crew will provide you one trade each day to bandy about. Since there are no actual games being played, we've got to keep occupied somehow.

As Jordan mentioned yesterday, Thaddeus Young has the Sixers in quite the predicament.  On the one hand, his play off the bench has been a key in the Sixers becoming a legitimate playoff contender in the east, providing the team with a skill set it otherwise sorely lacks.  His improved play under Collins, youth, and work ethic provide some semblance of hope for the future.

Among the highlights of our recent family holiday were the walks along the beach, where the children collected sea shells to take home and paint.

The simplest things often make the most successful outings.

It can be the same with meal times. Working up an appetite is one of life’s simple pleasures – assuming there is something good to eat, and quick to finish, at the end of it. The anticipation of eating always fuels me on a walk, especially if, once outdoors, the weather is the wrong side of brisk. The winter stew comes into its own on such a day: much of it I get done in advance, leaving the least possible to do at the last moment. It’s satisfying, filling, relatively quick and fairly inexpensive too.

'Black Swan' Tops Int'l Box Office for Second Straight Week With $17.2 Million

U.S. films dominated the overseas charts, with 'True Grit, 'No Strings Attached' and 'Yogi Bear' tied for No. 3 with $10 mil apiece, right behind $12.1 mil 'Tangled' at No. 2.

It's open season so far this year at the foreign box office.

Unlike the first two months of 2010 when Avatar monopolized overseas box office, 2011 on the foreign theatrical circuit remains fluid, allowing ample breathing room to a mix of Oscar nominated titles and local-language films.

Post-conversion 3-D is ruining movies and Hollywood

Hollywood is trying to scam us, but moviegoers are not buying what they are selling.

According to a recent National Association of Theater Owners ( NATO )survey, ticket prices rose to an all-time high of $7.89 per person in 2010, a 5 percentincrease when compared to 2009. While profits for the major studios stayed flat in 2010, attendance dropped 5.3 percent. Hollywood hopes this trend reverses in2011, but are already prepared just in case it doesn't. The plan: Saturate the market with 3-D fare, adding as much as $5 to the admittance price. This plan has faltered early in 2011, with "The Green Hornet" earning a disappointing $80 million to date, with critics and audiences feeling polarized towards the mundane 3-D visuals.

Michel Gondry to adapt Philip K. Dick's 'Ubik' - National Fanboys | Examiner.com

Michel Gondry is attached to adapt and direct Philip K. Dick's classic science fiction novel "Ubik," according to Deadline Hollywood.  Gondry's "The Green Hornet" is in theaters now, and has done respectable business.  He also directed "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."

Dick was premature when he was born in 1928, and he died prematurely at the age of 53.  Dick died on March 2, 1982, the result of a combination of recurrent strokes accompanied by heart failure.  His writing was largely ignored by both critics and mainstream readers during his life, but his popularity has mushroomed in the past three decades, thanks in part to Ridley Scott's 1982 movie "Blade Runner," which was based on Dick's novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"  Since then, the list of movies adapted from Dick's often trippy literary works is impressive, including Paul Verhoeven's "Total Recall" (which is soon to be remade), " Steven Spielberg's "Minority Report" and John Woo's "Paycheck," to name a few.  "The Adjustment Bureau," opening next month, is also based on a Philip K. Dick story.

ne thing you can say about “Sanctum” is that the in-your-face 3-D format in which it was shot has the effect of making you feel like you’re trapped in an enormous, flooding cave with the characters. Alas, the clunky dialogue and painful predictability of the story do not improve in 3-D.

PR-USA.net - Good Comic Books, the UK’s Comic Book Website Has Just Launched; http://www.goodcomicbooks.com

From a love of comic books, and to support the industry in every way, Good Comic Books is a comic book website with a British accent. The UK has a diverse comic book community with an individual character, and people need to be aware of comic book titles without the need for a movie to be made.

With so many films being released based on comic books, the UK community will thrive and many more people will be putting pen to paper and following in the footsteps of Alan Moore, Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. From the success of Green Hornet, to the indie appreciation of Scott Pilgrim, comic books are being given more and more attention, and Good Comic Books is there to find the next big thing.

The Irish film-maker who's stirring up a green hornet's nest in Hollywood

Many celebrities may spout green, but are they really cleaner than clean? Apparently not, according to an Irishman intent on exposing Hollywood superstars as 'eco-hypocrites'.

Robert Redford is the latest to have his green credentials flame-grilled by filmmaker Phelim McAleer. His new hostile, and to the point, short film, entitled Robert Redford : Hypocrite, accuses the Hollywood legend of failing to practise the environmentalism he so passionately preaches.

The Green Hornet is (back) in town! - National Comic Books | Examiner.com

The Green Hornet:Rated PG-13 (108 Minutes)Starring: Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Christoph Waltz, Edward James Olmos, David Harbour Directed by: Michel Gondry

As one of the world’s earliest costumed superheroes (The Green Hornet debuted on the radio in 1936 — two years before Action Comics #1 introduced us to Superman), he, and his ever-present side-kick Kato (no not the one that was sponging of OJ), have finally made their modern-day big-screen appearance. To be sure, over the past 75 years, this “dynamic” duo have appeared in all forms of media from their humble origins on the radio to comic books (Gold Key, Harvey, Dell, NOW, and now Dynamite), Film serials, as well as a short lived TV series (perhaps most memorable as it starred Bruce Lee as Kato).

Why the Steelers are back, the best passer ever, and another view on the Hall of Fame class. Dan Pompei

The Steelers have been here before. And it’s no coincidence.

The people change in Pittsburgh. The head coaches, the quarterbacks, the defensive playmakers. But the system implemented by the Rooney family stays the same. That’s what has made them different from any other team in the National Football League, and that’s what had made them more successful than any other team in the National Football League.

Film Clips: Pakistani Politics, a Deranged Roommate and a French Magician

(NR) Documentary filmmakers Duane Baughman and Johnny O'Hara present a nonfiction portrait of the recently-assassinated Pakistani political figure Benazir Bhutto.

THE ILLUSIONIST 3 stars (PG) In the late 1950s, a French stage magician finds his brand of entertainment pushed aside in favor of rock ’n’ roll, but a young Scottish lass renews his zest for life. The Triplets of Belleville director Sylvain Chomet helms this animated adaptation of an unproduced screenplay from beloved French filmmaker Jacques Tati, and constructs a loving homage to his spiritual mentor’s brand of gentle slapstick. Bittersweet and slow-paced, The Illusionist serves as a loving tribute to any profession or art form being replaced by new trends and technologies. - Curt Holman

“Tangled”: A 3-D, animated riff on the Rapunzel fairy tale, “Tangled” is a sure bet for kids 6 and older – funny in both dialogue and physical humor, handsomely made, and with inspired musical comedy moments. The talk bristles with today's slang, yet somehow works in a medieval setting. A sorceress (voice of Donna Murphy) steals the baby princess Rapunzel from the castle and locks the infant in a tower. Rapunzel grows up believing the sorceress is her overprotective mother and doesn't realize that her magically resplendent 600-foot-long tresses keep the sorceress looking young. When Rapunzel nears 18 (now voiced by Mandy Moore) and her “mother” is away one day, Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi), a thief on the run, scales the tower to hide, having just stolen a crown from the palace. Rapunzel bops him on the head with a skillet, but he's secretly smitten and takes her to see a bit of the real world. Maximus, a royal horse, is still on Flynn's trail for the theft. Man and horse soon realize they must save Rapunzel from the sorceress.

I Love You Phillip Morris

127 Hours ★★★★ Even if you know the real-life story of Aron Ralston, you won’t be prepared for the way James Franco, as Ralston, plays the moment when he realizes he’s had his arm pinned to a canyon wall in Southern Utah — a frozen look not of fear or pain, but sheer incredulity. Franco’s brilliant as a guy slowly realizing that he’s completely screwed, yet he never over-plays what could have turned into a showy actor’s playground. Co-writer and director Danny Boyle comes perilously close to over-playing the melodrama of Ralston’s growing despair; he’s much savvier at building visual variety into Ralston’s static story. Smartest of all, he knows when to ease up and let Franco’s performance carry the narrative, so that even the harrowing, graphic scenes never feel like exploitation. It’s a tragically human story, captured by something as simple as one incredulous glance. (R) (AMC Dutch Square; Carmike 14; Regal Sandhill)

Rabbit Hole – Bucking The Trend

With John Cameron Mitchell's domestic drama in cinemas this week, we consider what happens when directors have an unexpected change of tack.

Right now, there’s an emerging mini-trend of established directors throwing curve balls at their audience by releasing films which are just a little different.

Think the lifeblood of Michel Gondry’s work – colour, imagination, DIY creativity – being ruthlessly drained from The Green Hornet . There’s the restrained Rabbit Hole from John Cameron Mitchell , the flamboyant genius behind offbeat comedy Hedwig and the Angry Inch . And the solid, but relative genericness of The Fighter from former indie kid, and I Heart Huckabees director, David O Russell .

DVDs you should have seen -- but didn't

Nuns in the Himalayas, Jarmusch in Memphis, Jackie Chan back in Asia, Gamera, "Death Race 2000" and more

Let me save you some time, along with wear and tear on those e-mailin' fingers. Yes, the title of this sporadic feature is obnoxious, and the DVDs reviewed are (in some but not all cases) almost willfully obscure. That's pretty much the point! I mean, look: "Kick-Ass" is out on DVD too. But let's think about that for a second: You don't care what I think about that movie, and neither do I. Are we clear?

Smashing the box office in 2011 - Teton Valley News: Smashing-the-box-office-in: nate and tony at the movies, green hornet, green lantern, thor, x-m...

With a whole year unusually chock full of superheroes and sequels, we take a look at what films we think will be a smash at the box office and what records you can expect to be broken.

We've already seen one of the five big superhero flicks opening this year: the somewhat average "Green Hornet," which really didn't make much of a splash in terms of box office earnings. We expect the similar we will said of Ryan Reynolds' "The Green Lantern," out in June. Though Reynolds is certainly at the top of our favorite actors list, the trailers for "The Green Lantern" fail to wow, and the hero himself lacks the star power of staples like Batman, Iron Man or Spider-man, which have all been big scorers at the box office.

5 Comic Book Movies That Should Be Made and Why

5 comic book movies that I think should be made. It's as simple as that...

We always want our favorite characters to show up on the big screen, but usually our demands are never met. The demands are never met simply because not many people have an interest in smaller name heroes or villains. So I spent some time researching and decided on 5 comic book films that should be made due to their ability to keep indie credibility whilst being mainstream at the same time. As you read on, explanations will be given for each film and my lead actor/director picks.

Movie Review: The Green Hornet - Entertainment

Over the years, Hollywood seems to have developed a formula for producing the classic superhero film. In each plot, regardless of premise, powers or costume, the main character is typically a noble figure, wrestling with the ethical concerns of his or her hidden life. They are blessed with unnatural powers or incredible resources, which allow them to fight the scourges of society. In some instances, a sidekick exists to help in this timeless quest. However, the hero inevitably makes a final stand when the story reaches its climax.

“ The Green Hornet” makes one thing abundantly clear: Seth Rogen is no superhero. Unfortunately, everything else about the movie — such as entertainment value, originality and execution — is far less convincing.

Suns 104, Hornets 102: Welp - At The Hive

With Emeka Okafor out and the Suns' three point stroke on, the Hornets dropped a second straight game against subpar opposition.

It would be dumb to make light of losing Emeka Okafor. We've harped on his importance to the team's defense all year long, and tonight, we were provided the opportunity to see quite literally what his absence would mean. Phoenix carved open the New Orleans interior before kicking it out to wide open perimeter shooters. Credit the Suns' impeccable ball movement; they have great confidence in their shooters, and they know that's how they win ball games.
