ESCONDIDO ---- Patio Playhouse will feature the first public reading of "The Man Who Laughs" at 8 p.m. Feb. 5 at 201 E. Grand Ave., ste. D. The performance of this "play in process" by Alicia Nyblade, adapted from the novel by Victor Hugo, will be followed by an open forum where the audience may meet with the author and cast and discuss the play. ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Children's Museum, located at 380 N. Escondido Blvd., will hold the following events in the month of February:

-- A Celebration of the Chinese New Year 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 5.

-- A Celebration of Healthy Hearts 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 12.

-- Presented by the Leichtag Family Foundation: World Religions within the San Diego Community: A Celebration of Sharing, 12:30 to 2 p.m. Feb. 27.

ESCONDIDO ---- The North County/Escondido Panhellenic meeting will begin with social time at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 5 at 1109 Via La Cuesta. All collegiate sorority women are invited and asked to bring a salad to share. Call 760-746-4014.

OCEANSIDE ---- The Women's Resource Center and San Luis Rey Rotary will hold the annual Applause for a Cause event at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 6540 Carlsbad Blvd., Carlsbad. The event will feature Dan Cohen, an anchor of KFMB Channel 8 News. While the Academy Awards are shown on 10-foot TV screens, participants will enjoy a sit-down dinner, wine, movie trivia, prizes for best dressed, raffles and silent auction items. Tickets cost $85. OCEANSIDE ---- MiraCosta College will present the "Calculations for Future Events" art exhibit featuring acrylic paintings by David Andersen Feb. 8 through March 3 at the college's Kruglak Gallery, 1 Barnard Drive, in the Student Center. A artist's reception will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 8. Andersen will give a talk at 11 a.m. Feb. 17. A former scientist, Andersen's work explores his approach to the dissection and study of ideas. Gallery hours are 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. FALLBROOK ---- Fallbrook School of the Arts will offer a beginning six-week drawing course for youth ages 12 and up with art teacher Brooke O'Neill from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturdays Feb. 5 through Mar. 12. The course will focus on contour line drawing, value/form/composition through still life, atmospheric and linear perspective and color theory/proportion through figure drawing using pencil, conte and chalk pastels. Supplies recommended are an 11-inch-by-14-inch or larger sketchbook, drawing pencil, hand sharpener, pencil and gum erasers, ruler, rag, conte and chalk pastel set. Most materials available to loan. FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook Art Center will feature the "World of Watercolor" exhibit, beginning with an artist reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 5 in the Janice Griffiths Gallery at 103 S. Main St. This exhibit, which will run through Mar. 27, is a dual presentation featuring the second annual Signature American Watercolor Exhibition, in conjunction with California Style Regionalists from 1920-2000 provided by CaliforniaWatercolor.com. This is a chance to see current works by 60 of the nation's top watercolor artists, joined by renowned regionalists including Phil Dike, Emil Kosa Jr., Millard Sheets and others. The paintings include a wide range of directions and techniques, from experimental to traditional. Cost for the reception is $10, or free for center premier level members. CARLSBAD ---- The League of Women Voters North Coast will hold its annual theater party fundraiser at a performance of the play "Waving Goodbye" at 1 p.m. Feb. 6 at the New Village Arts Theatre, 2767 B State St. Parking is at the train station. -- Feb. 15: The Carlsbad High School Chamber Orchestra will perform a "sweetheart treat" for Kiwanis Valentines Day.

-- Feb. 22: Sean Salazar, a personal trainer at Perfect Fit Shop, will present "How To Be Fit and Healthy."

-- "Managing Stress and Not Letting It Control You," noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Magdalena Ecke YMCA, 200 Saxony Road, Encinitas. Dr. Robert Solomon, a board-certfied adult, child and adolescent psychiatrist, will discuss the importance of stress management for maintaining wellness.

-- "How to Get Kids to Eat Great and Love It," 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Dove Library, 1775 Dove Lane, Carlsbad. Dr. Christine Wood, pediatrician, will discuss nutrition and techniques parents can use to encourage healthy eating habits for children.

-- "Dementia and Heart Disease," noon to 2 p.m. Feb. 24 at Silverado Senior Living Center, 335 Saxony Road, Encinitas. Dr. Franklin Zalman, board certified in interventional cardiology, will cover topics such as staving off dementia and the link between dementia and cardiovascular disease.
