Family Film Guide

Check out this guide before you take the kids:

"Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" (G) Story: Documentary shows the tween pop star in concert, in home videos, backstage - and all in 3-D, where available. Backstory: Bieber and his mentor, Usher Raymond IV, are listed among the movie's producers. Verdict: Squeaky-clean safe. **  1/2

"Gnomeo & Juliet" (G) Story: A star-crossed couple of garden gnomes must deal with their families' objections to their courtship. Backstory: 3-D version of "Romeo and Juliet," told with lawn ornaments and featuring songs by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Verdict: Mild cartoon violence. ***

"No Strings Attached" (R) Story: Two longtime friends who have been unlucky in love enter into a "friends with benefits" arrangement. Backstory: In 2008, the film's original shooting script earned a spot on the Black List, an annual ranking of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. Verdict: Adult language, sex, some drug use make this inappropriate for those under 15. **

"The Mechanic" (R) Story: A hit man agrees to train the son of a man he killed in his profession. Backstory: Remake of 1972 Charles Bronson action movie, with Jason Statham. Verdict: Plentiful violence makes this inappropriate for younger teens. ***

"The Green Hornet" (PG-13) Story: When his publisher father is murdered, a playboy becomes a masked vigilante. Backstory: Art-house director Michel Gondry stepped in when kung fu director Stephen Chow dropped out. Verdict: Some action violence and innuendo, but OK for teens. ***  1/2

"The Dilemma" (PG-13) Story: A guy finds out his best friend's wife is cheating and wrestles with it. Backstory: Star Vince Vaughn co-produced this buddy/relationship comedy with director Ron Howard. Verdict: Violence and sexual situations make it inappropriate for younger teens. *
