Check out our top 10 list and weigh in on your favorites.
TOP 10 SUPERHERO MOVIES:
The first Hellboy was a great superhero flick and proved very entertaining, but the sequel was a pleasant surprise. It ended up outperforming the first take on the film and contained some amazingly choreographed battle scenes. The romantic subplot was also a nice touch to the tough guy superhero flick. Director Guillermo del Toro has quite the imagination and it translates well onto the big screen. Ron Perlman does a great job as the title character and present a dry humor that makes this film enjoyable to watch.
The special effects on this film alone were pretty amazing - transforming Edward Norton into The Incredible Hulk was quite the job. Many critics believed this film was much better than director Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk and we tend to agree. The final battle scene between the Hulk and the Abomination on the rooftops of Harlem were epically staged and carried out. Edward Norton played a very believable Bruce Banner/The Hulk and we truly believe he is dealing with some inner torment. It was nominated as one of the best superhero flicks of 2008 and it well received by audiences.
It's hard to choose between the first Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 , but we decided to stick with the original. The original gives you a great take on how Peter Parker became Spider-Man. Tobey Maguire plays an unparalleled version of the masked superhero, play the geeky Peter Parker with an unassuming charm. You sympathize with this young kid going through such drastic changes to become one of the best known superheros of all time. The film balances the action with the back story and there are never moments in the telling of Spider-Man transformation that drags. Finally, who can forget that epic kiss in the rain - Mary Jane sure didn't!
This superhero flick isn't based on a comic book character or a previously told story. Creators were able to put together their own take on superheros and it turned out to be a funny and entertaining tale of a superhero family forced back into the game, along with their children. Their powers are pretty awesome - we would have loved any of those superpowers! Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter star as the elder incredibles and their vocal talent really shines to make this film energetic and fun to watch. Pixar really hit the nail on the head with this fun children's film, that adults enjoyed just as much.
All the X-Men films were pretty incredible, but X-Men United was particularly good, with just the right amount of both action and heart. The first X-Men was great, but the sequel brought an even more interesting story and better battle scenes than the first. The epic battle between Wolverine and Deathstrike is enough for this film to make it onto our top 10. The casting was pretty great too - there were so many characters in this one, but you never feel like you don't see enough of any of them. Hugh Jackman did a much better job as Wolverine this time around and it really made for a better film overall.
The Watchman film is especially appreciated by fans of the original comics. People who didn't know the original comics probably wouldn't have really understood film and many probably found themselves glancing at their watches during the extremely long flick. But Watchmen fans who stuck around for the entirety got to experience a great murder mystery plot, along with some enlightening flashbacks to help propel the plot. Directed by 300 director Zack Snyder, the film was quite the success with comic book fans and makes our list for that very reason.
The revamped series of Batman flicks are packed full of special effects and they are incredible films, but the original Batman with Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, and Kim Basinger is a superhero movie staple. The film is the first installment of the Warner Bros. film series and it leads the pack on mystery and intrigue. Jack Nicholson's joker is terrifying and epic, and probably would have remained the best joker ever played, if Heath Ledger didn't come in to blow him out of the water. Nevertheless, even 20 years later, this film is still entertaining to watch and sets a very high standard for any preceding Batman flicks.
Iron Man did not have high expectations when filming started in 2007. Many people didn't think it could measure up to Spider-Man and X-Men, but it proved everybody wrong. Jon Favreau created an epic world of intrigue and humor with his first installment in the Iron Man series. The film owes most of its success to the incredible performance by Robert Downey Jr., who played a sarcastic and smart-alecky Tony Stark, to perfection. Stark is cool and collected, and perfectly compliments his intelligent and logical personal secretary Pepper Potts, played with charisma by Gwyneth Paltrow.
There have been a few good Superman films to come after the classic 1978 Christopher Reeves version, but there's no doubt about it - Christopher Reeves IS Superman. Even without all the modern high tech stunts and special effects, Reeves plays the classic cape hero with a special charm never quite recaptured in subsequent film versions. The legacy of Reeves' Superman has lived on - the film's final sequence, which features Superman flying high above the Earth at sunrise and smiling briefly at the camera, is featured in the Brandon Routh version, Superman Returns. Nothing captures the essence of Superman like the original.
We give The Dark Knight the top spot on our list because it is quite possibly the best superhero film ever made. The depth of storytelling, along with the epic battle scenes, and character acting, make it one of the best films of 2009 and by far, one of the best superhero films of all times. Christian Bale comes back better than ever as the flippant playboy Bruce Waynewho turns into the deep-voiced caped crusader. Heath Ledger's epic performance as The Joker makes this film both terrifying and mesmerizing. Ledger will forever replace Nicholson as the pinnacle of terrifying superhero villains. The film also has great character development and an intriguing and easy to follow storyline that makes it one of the best films of the year. Too bad Christopher Nolan can't seem to get the recognition he deserves.
