Emporia State University is expected to announce the hiring of Boise State assistant basketball coach Shaun Vandiver as the new men’s head basketball coach at ESU.
The announcement is expected to come at 3 p.m. today at a news conference at the Alumni Center on the ESU campus.
Vandiver will replace former ESU head coach David Moe, who resigned last month. Vandiver, who was in his first year as an assistant coach at Boise State, also has coached at Wyoming, Bowling Green and Northern Colorado.
“It’s probably one of the most exciting times in my life besides getting married and having children,” Vandiver said.
Vandiver began his college playing career at Hutchinson Community College, where he played for one season. He then played at the University of Colorado from 1988-91. Vandiver was the Big 8 Conference Newcomer of the Year in his first season with the Buffaloes. Vandiver also earned All-Big 8 first-team honors in 1990 and 1991.
Vandiver was a first round draft pick by the Golden State Warriors in the 1991 NBA Draft but his NBA career didn’t pan out. Vandiver then played overseas for nine years.
Vandiver has no head coaching experience but has connections to ESU, most notably Moe. When Moe was an assistant coach at Colorado from 1993-2001, Vandiver was finishing up his professional career.
Vandiver has another connection to ESU: Current Boise State assistant coach Jeff Linder was Moe’s first assistant coach at ESU. Linder spent three seasons on the ESU coaching staff. Linder also served as an assistant coach at Colorado for one season prior coming to ESU.
Emporia State Athletics Director Kent Weiser said the future for ESU men’s basketball was bright.
“I think we hired a great guy,” Weiser said. “I’m very excited about the future of ESU athletics and what Coach V. can bring to our athletic department and our student athletes, not only from an athletic and a teaching and an academic standpoint. I couldn’t be happier.”
And Vandiver said he was looking forward to beginning his career at Emporia State.
“Right now the biggest thing is going out and representing ESU in the best light and the best way possible and go out and bring quality student athletes here to campus and help us win a lot of games and graduate my kids and enjoy being a Hornet."
