GREEN, Ohio – One of the Suburban League’s premier track & field athletes was injured Tuesday during a boys dual meet at Green Memorial Stadium.
A contender to win the Division I state long jump championship, Highland senior Nathan Chronister tweaked a leg muscle in the final stretch of the 100-meter dash.
“I think he’ll wind up being fine in a week or two,” Highland boys track coach Josh Victor said. “We’ll let him rest.”
Nearing the finish line, Chronister slowed and then reached for the back of his left leg.
“Just as I was starting my lean, I felt something pop,” he said. “I’ve never been injured before.”
Chronister had just won the long jump (22-2) and was competing in his second event.
At the Lakewood Division I District meet, Chronister won the long jump (23-1), took third in the 4x4 (3:28.55), sixth in the 100 and seventh in the 200.
At the Amherst Regional, he placed third in long jump (22-7.75). The Hornets’ 4x4 relay finished well back at Amherst and did not advance.
Then at the OHSAA State Championships, Chronister finished 10th in long jump (21-5).
“I think it scared him more than anything,” Highland assistant coach Jim Addington said. “We’ll definitely take it slow coming back.”
In two other meets:
TALLMADGE, Ohio – Kyle Tywon won three events while Noah Winters captured two to lead the host Blue Devils to this Suburban League victory over the Colts. Tywon was first in the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.1, 300 hurdles (42.0), long jump (19-11.5) and high jump (5-8). Winters’ triumphs came in the 100 (11.2), 400 (54.0) and 200 (23.5).
WESTFIELD TWP., Ohio – Jennifer Foster had three firsts for the Colts, but that was not enough in this SL meet to top the visiting Blue Devils, who had three girls with two wins each. Foster’s victories came in the 100 hurdles (15.8), pole vault (10-0) and high jump (5-0). For Tallmadge, Jackie Koza was tops in the 1,600 (5:58) and 3,200 (13:30), and Megan Pitz in the shot put (36-0.5) and discus (96-10).
