The most anticipated movies of 2011?

Last Sunday, the critics at the Post-Dispatch assembled lists of the most anticipated new releases in their respective fields for the first quarter of 2011.

But at the movies, winter is a burial ground. While the Oscar-contending films lure the last of the stragglers, the new releases are a woeful bunch. But like a city without a playoff-caliber football team, movie fans await the spring, when the Cardinals report to spring training and buzzworthy flicks return to the multiplex.

This year, there will be sequels aplenty, including the latest "Transformers," "Harry Potter," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Hangover," "Scream" and  "Cars" movies.  There will be superheroes, including "The Green Hornet," "Thor" "Captain America" and "The Green Lantern." And there will be super directors, including new movies from Steven Speilberg, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Terrence Malick.

Here are some titles and dates that I suggest you mark on your calendar. (But remember, high hopes don't always pan out. it was just a couple months ago that we were exctied about Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie co-starring in the tourist, and how'd that work out?)

Red State (religious-themed horror flick directed by Kevin Smith, with John Goodnam and Michael Parks): spring release date TBD
