Welcome to January, a traditional "dumping ground" month for the film industry that tends to see the release of a bunch of movies studios really don't have that much faith in and won't distract them from their Oscar campaigns. Heck, there weren't any new releases last weekend. Talk about a dull month for movie fans.
However, there are a few films seeking your attention this month and while Michel Gondry's 'The Green Hornet' looks to be the big release to see this January, two others are trying to woo audiences with some raunchy and/or violent red-band trailers (in other words, NSFW in a big, big way).
Check out the new red-band trailers for the Jason Statham action flick 'The Mechanic' and the Natalie Portman/Ashton Kutcher romantic comedy 'No Strings Attached' after the jump. Oh, and while we're here, let's also take a look at the trailer for 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules.' You know, for kids.
First up, here's ' The Mechanic ,' a remake of a 1972 Charles Bronson hitman film ( note that this trailer is NSFW ):
Who could have foreseen a partnership between Jason Statham, whose inconsistent film choices are buoyed by his always being a complete and total badass, and Ben Foster, a wonderful, human actor who feels at home in Oscar bait as well as schlock like 'Pandorum'? Their chemistry should be the thing to savor here, since this film looks like a pretty generic "assassin gets betrayed by his employers and seeks vengeance" movie, although this red band trailer does promise a slick, nasty and sexy kind of a generic (in other words, one of the best kinds of generic).
Next up is ' No Strings Attached, ' a raunchy rom com starring a soon-to-be-Oscar-winner (hopefully) and Ashton Kutcher's naked butt ( note that this trailer is NSFW ):
The trailer makes the film look like it's trying a little too hard to mimic the raunchy casualness of Judd Apatow films like 'The 40 Year Old Virgin' and 'Knocked up,' but Portman is always an endearing presence and Kutcher, despite being more famous for his Twitter feed than his acting work, is capable of a certain amount of charisma. Will this be a return to form for 'Ghostbusters' director Ivan Reitman? Signs point to "Eh, who knows?"
And to take things around 180 degrees, here's the trailer for 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules ', which should be safe for work as long as your work is cool with poop and tons of shots of young boys running around in their underwear:
Wacky shenanigans abound! If any film is capable of portraying the harsh realities of middle school life, surely it must be this one. Whether that statement is sarcasm or not depends entirely on your personal perspective. You can make that clear in the comments below.
'The Mechanic' opens January 28th, 'No Strings Attached' on January 21st and 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules' will punish you with its unflinching realism on March 25.
