WASHINGTON - Next month, the creator of the breakthrough 3D megahit "Avatar" ventures below ground with "Sanctum," a thriller that follows a team of cavers who descend miles below the earth's surface only to be trapped by a flood.
Popular Mechanics' list of 21 Movies We Can't Wait to See in 2011 excludes romantic productions such as March's "Jane Eyre" for CGI-heavy alien, action and superhero flicks that target men.
Anthony Hopkins plays Odin in the Marvel Comics production of "Thor" in May. Marvel's "Captain America: The First Avenger" is slated for a July release. The separate appearances of the Norse god and a World War II hero set the stage for 2012's "Avengers" team-up, which will also include "Iron Man."
Another exciting collaboration comes from what has to be an alien-lover's dream team: J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg's "Super 8." The trailer reveals little plot, but sets the scene with a train wreck in Area 51, where a powerful ... something ... is steadily demolishing a steel boxcar -- from the inside.
If the trailers are any clue, the well-known comic book hero "Green Lantern," coming in June and the once-well known radio star "Green Hornet" in January seem to take crime-fighting less seriously than such superhero superstars as Spider-Man, Iron Man and Batman.
The list also includes "Sucker Punch" in March, "Source Code" in April, "Planet of the Apes" prequel "Rise of the Apes" in June and "Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2" in July.
