"Rango" comes in second followed by "Black Swan" in third as last week's champ "I Am Number Four" falls, appropriately enough, into the No. 4 position.
UPDATE: Fresh from its best picture Oscar win, The King's Speech scored its first No. 1 box office victory on the foreign theatrical circuit as the historical drama's full weekend take disclosed Monday came to $19.4 million from 3,593 screens in 48 markets.
Overseas cume for the Weinstein Co. co-production, which won Colin Firth a best actor Oscar for his portrayal of a stammering King George VI of Britain, now totals $186.7 million -- of which $65 derives from the U.K. market -- and its worldwide tally stands at $310 million.
Speech opened in seven largely smaller markets on the weekend, with its Denmark bow via Svensk providing $545,528 from 80 locations for a per-screen average of $6,819. A No. 1 third weekend in Germany via Senator provided $2.6 million from 403 screens for a market cume of $8.9 million.
Otherwise, it was a largely lackluster stanza in generally anemic year so far on the foreign theatrical circuit. Paramount's much-anticipated scored a No. 2 opening at the overseas box office but with a less-than-lofty gross of $16.5 million drawn from 3,815 screens in 33 markets.
No first-place box office title this year has logged an opening weekend gross of more than $27 million overseas. As a result, foreign box office for the six American majors through February collectively dipped 31% from 2010 (when Avatar was roaring through its offshore release, commanding high-double and triple-digit weekend tallies).
A droll animation Western directed by Gore Verbinski , with the title character voiced by Verbinski's Pirates of the Caribbean cohort Johnny Depp , Rango boasted of No. 1 openings in the U.K. and Ireland ($2.65 million from 470 locations), Mexico ($2.6 million from 691 venues) and Spain ($1.9 million from 369 spots).
Overall, the Rango openings bested in many markets those of Megamind, a DreamWorks Animation title that Paramount opened overseas last Oct. 28, and which has accumulated a foreign gross total of $171.1 million so far. Rango , also the No. 1 domestic opener , bows this week in Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Italy.
Premiering No. 5 on the weekend was , Universal's drama-romance starring Matt Damon , which took in $10.36 million from 1,981 locations in 21 markets. Universal says the opening weekend figure was the biggest for a Damon vehicle since the $30 million bow 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum , and was bigger than the $9 million opening of 2002's Bourne Identity .
Bureau 's No. 2 bow in the U.K. produced $2.3 from 440 spots while its No. 2 Australia opener yielded $1.9 million from 216 locations. The film also opened No. 2 in the U.S. and Canada; worldwide, the gross is $31.6 million. Debuts in 10 foreign territories are scheduled this week including Germany.
, the New Line/Warner Bros.' comedy from the Farrelly brothers (Bobby and Peter) starring Owen Wilson , premiered in five overseas markets for $2.3 million from 443 screens. Almost all the action came from the film's No. 1 Australia opening ($2 million from 305 screens).
DreamWorks' sci-fi thriller , which finished No. 1 last stanza and ranks No. 4 this time, came in with $12.5 million drawn from 3,963 screens in 27 territories. (Disney is distributing the film overseas.) Nearly a quarter of Four's overseas box office total ($42.1 million) comes from the film's strong China run, which generated $3.7 million from 1,200 locations on the weekend for a market cume of $9.4 million
Placing third on the weekend was 20th Century Fox's Black Swan , which won a best actress Oscar for Natalie Portman , and which grossed $15.76 million from 3,959 screens in 45 markets. A No. 1 second weekend in Korea provided $2.35 million from 352 sites for a market cume of $6.2 million. Overall international gross total stands at $148.1 million.
Paramount's True Grit delivered $7.3 million from 2,564 in 48 territories hoisting the Coen brothers' Western update's foreign cume to $60.2 million. Of that number, $7.1 million comes from France, where Grit grabbed $2.1 million on the weekend from 404 situations.
Animation outing Gnomeo & Juliet has overseas gross total of $29.1 million from all distributors, as per Disney, which is distributing the title in some territories. The film's U.K. market cume via E1 Entertainment totals $22.9 million.
Sony's Just Go With It , the romantic comedy costarring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston , drew $7.25 million from 2,037 screens in 33 territories for a foreign cume so far of $35.1 million. Biggest markets are the U.K. (cume $8.9 million), Mexico ($6.5 million) and Germany ($5.7 million). A No. 1 Brazil bow generated $1.75 million from 281 sites.
Paramount's No Strings Attached costarring Portman opposite Ashton Kutcher pushed its overseas gross total to $44 million thanks to a $6.1 million weekend at 2,559 screens in 38 markets. A Russia opening delivered $1.9 million from 430 sites. In France, the romantic comedy has accumulated $6.6 million so far.
Japan engagements usually come late in most films' release cycles but the payoff is often worth the wait. Sony and other distributors' The Tourist opened No. 3 at 338 screens in the market on the weekend and drew $3.76 million. Weekend in total provided $5.1 million from 2,580 situations in 35 markets. Foreign cume stands at $191 million.
Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son , the latest in Fox's comedy series starring Martin Lawrence in drag, opened in 11 markets and pulled $4.8 million overall from 2,358 screens in 32 markets for an international cume of $19.8 million. Disney Animations's 3D reworking of Brother Grimm, Tangled, grossed $4 million from 2,392 venues in 43 territories in its 14th weekend of overseas playoff. Overseas cume stands at $350.1 million.
Another strong Japan run, this one for Fox's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader , generated $4.14 million from 910 locations for a market cume of $15 million over two rounds. Weekend overall provided $4.35 million from 975 screens in three territories. Cume stands at $293.4 million.
Japan's No. 1 title was the latest in the venerable Doraemon series from Toho, Doraemon The Movie: Nobita and the Steel Troops - The New Ag e. Opener for the local language outing at 368 sites drew $5.4 million.
Universal's release of British-made comedy Paul generated $2.2 million in its France opening at 291 sites while the weekend overall in three territories provided $4.1 million at 748 locations for an international cume of $22 million. It's U.S and Canada opening date is set for March 18.
Still No. 1 in France in its fifth round is Pathe's hit comed y Rien a declarer ( Nothing to Declare ), which generated $4.1 million on the weekend at 890 sites for a market cume of $66.1 million. Fox's Gulliver's Travels in 3D starring Jack Black came up with $3.1 million from 2,036 situations in 21 territories for an overseas gross total of $170.7 million.
